After a couple of weeks in programming, I noticed some of the patterns in my coding learning routine. I cannot say that the learning process has a tight schedule but I follow some “rules” that I would like to share with you. Let’s go!

What are the patterns in my learning routine

In my opinion, there is a lot of ways how to approach learning in general. I would say that every person has their own style. For me, I derive inspiration for my learning routine from my past experience, when I was learning English at high school. Yes, we got some books and lessons at school but for me, it was not only about getting a good mark on the exam. I tried to surround myself with English in my everyday life because it was a real-life skill that I wanted to master. Everything that was consumable was from that moment in English – my phone, music I was listening to, TV series, etc. This setting helped me a lot to get used to foreign languages in everyday life.

Starting this coding/programming journey, I realized this could also be a way how to approach it. So I started to surround myself with the content especially related to this topic. Even though I was not able to digest it from the beginning, I just listened. Sometimes, I was listening to some video a couple of times without understanding but after some time I got it. (not everything but I am on a way and still learning)

What are the things I surround myself with? I realized there are a couple of platforms where I consume content. There are mostly social/video networks – YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and then also some blogs/web portals but mostly without any coding/programming content. I also read books and watch movies/TV series on Netflix from time to time (not very often, because I do not have that much spare time). I was thinking that what if I still am consuming content but I just change the content itself – not watching some without value videos, but switch it to valuable content related to the topic (coding/programming) I would like to learn about.

Tip: Go to Youtube and Instagram and look for accounts about HTML, CSS, Javascript, or other languages (or topics you would like to learn about) CHECK: 1 of my tips for YouTube channel and 1 of my tips for Instagram profile

Do I follow any online course?

Well, I need to admit that yes. Following a course is part of my coding learning routine. For HTML and CSS I followed a free online course on Codeacademy. Then I also come across the website Freecodecamp where you can easily follow HTML, CSS, and also other topics and earn free certifications. I earned an HTML, CSS certification on freecodecamp.org. Currently, I also follow the JavaScript course on Udemy and JavaScript certification course on freecodecamp.org.

How Do I combine all of these sources of information?

The Grass is Greener Where You Water It. So I am trying to follow the theory courses and then I come up with some ideas for the project. I try to implement all the information from the theory into practice. Because when I followed just theory I was excellent in theory but I was stuck at the practical application of it. I think that theory or courses are a great source of information where you can grasp what is possible within the technology that we decided to learn. But we need to apply it. Do not forget: The Grass is Greener Where You Water It, study theory and apply it! I am doing it for example in my first BMI calculator or mini project for Ukulele chords. (I also play ukulele :)) I also wrote an article about my approach to developing the BMI calculator. You can read it here.

Thats is it for the coding learning routine? Nope!

I have not admitted that besides all of these resources and approaches to my learning I use Google a lot. Once I start to apply the theory sometimes I need to google the possible solutions or some experience from other people that were trying to solve the same situation before. After googling I usually visit stackoverflow.com, MDN Web Docs, w3schools.

Summary

Hard to say if I was right in the headline of this article which says something about learning routine. I cannot say exactly that I follow this particular routine but I am trying to get to my goal by getting the knowledge from more experienced people. During the application of theory, I learn I try to come up with my own solutions and also google some other solutions and approaches which altogether lead to a solution to the problem. In my free time when scrolling Instagram or watching videos on Youtube, I follow some specialized accounts related to the topic that I like.

I need to say that everybody has their own journey and what fits me does not have to fit you. You can for sure inspire here, go and find your own way 🙂 I am also doing it. Fingers crossed and feel free to share with me your tips and approaches!
